Best Prop Firms in 2026 — Which Legit Firm Should You Choose?

A side-by-side look at pricing, drawdown, profit split, and payout terms across the firms traders compare most — including where each one has actually drawn complaints.

Quick answer

There isn't one "best" prop firm — there's the best fit for how you trade. FTMO, FundedNext, and The5ers have the longest track records and the most independent reviews. FundingPips offers the most flexible payout scheduling. Topstep and Apex are futures-only, with same-day or near-instant payout speed. ForRealFunding is newer and doesn't yet have that review history, but publishes its rules, pricing, and payout process openly — including a Pay After Pass entry from $9.99 and a 120% refund of your fee when you pass. Compare the table below against what actually matters to you: cost, drawdown room, payout speed, or instruments.

Methodology

How we define "legit"

No firm on this page paid for inclusion or a better spot in the table. Every figure below comes from each firm's own published pricing/rules pages, cross-checked against independent reviews where they exist.

Published, checkable rules

Daily drawdown, max drawdown, minimum trading days, and payout terms are stated in writing somewhere you can read before you pay — not just in a sales call.

A real payout process

A defined first-payout requirement, a stated processing time, and at least one named withdrawal method (bank transfer, Rise, crypto, etc.).

A refund or fee-back policy

What happens to your evaluation fee if you pass — refunded, credited, or kept — should be stated plainly, not discovered after the fact.

Independent trader feedback, where it exists

Trustpilot, Reddit, and forum discussion where available. Newer firms won't have this yet — that's a data gap to be honest about, not a reason to fabricate it.

Firm by Firm

What each firm is actually good at

Strengths and real, sourced complaints for each firm — not just marketing copy.

ForRealFunding

Forex/CFD/Crypto

Best for: Traders who want a low-cost entry point and to choose their own evaluation style

Strengths

  • +120% refund of your challenge fee when you pass
  • +Pay After Pass model — start proving skill for $9.99 before paying the rest
  • +One platform (MT5) across every program, no add-on confusion

Watch out for

  • New brand — no independent Trustpilot or Reddit track record yet, so you're relying on published rules rather than years of trader reports
  • Lower max funding ceiling ($500K) than firms with long scaling plans

FTMO

Forex/CFD/Crypto

Best for: Traders who want the longest track record and the highest scaling ceiling

Strengths

  • +The industry's longest track record and largest review volume (4.8/5, 46,000+ Trustpilot reviews)
  • +100% fee refund on passing
  • +Widest instrument list of the major firms

Watch out for

  • Traders report a 1% risk-per-trade rule that isn't clearly disclosed until you're consistently profitable
  • Some reports of stricter rule enforcement once an account becomes consistently profitable

  • +4.5/5 across 62,000+ Trustpilot reviews and $284.6M+ paid out since 2022
  • +Widest menu of evaluation models of any firm compared here

The5ers

Forex/CFD/Crypto

Best for: Traders prioritizing the highest scaling ceiling in the industry

Strengths

  • +Highest advertised scaling ceiling compared here ($4M)
  • +~4.7–4.8/5 across 14,000–18,000+ Trustpilot reviews

  • An identity/video verification call before payout catches some traders off guard

FundingPips

Forex/CFD/Crypto

Best for: Traders who want to pick their own payout schedule

Strengths

  • +Payout frequency is fully trader-selected, unusual flexibility
  • +4.5/5 across 52,000+ Trustpilot reviews
  • +Markets a "zero denials" payout policy

Watch out for

  • Some traders report profits stripped from restricted news windows, which feels like a denial even when the firm doesn't classify it that way
  • Account closures some traders discover only during compliance review at payout time

Topstep

Futures only

Best for: Futures traders who want same-day payout speed

Strengths

  • +Sub-9-second Aeropay payouts for US traders
  • +$1.4B+ paid out, independently corroborated across 13,500+ reviews
  • +No minimum trading days

Watch out for

  • Subscription pricing model means costs stack up across repeated failed Combine attempts
  • Futures only — not an option if you want to trade forex or crypto

Apex Trader Funding

Futures only

Best for: Futures traders who want to run many funded accounts at once for aggregate size

Strengths

  • +$721M+ paid out since 2021
  • +Can scale by running up to 20 accounts simultaneously rather than one large account
  • +Low-cost entry on smaller evaluation sizes

Watch out for

  • Reviews are more divided than the other firms compared here
  • Recurring 2026 complaints about payouts held "under review" for weeks without clear resolution
  • Max account size was reduced from $300K to $150K in the March 2026 rules overhaul

Goat Funded Trader

Forex/CFD/Crypto

Best for: Traders who want a very low entry price and are comfortable with tighter funded-stage restrictions

Strengths

  • +Very low headline entry price on smaller account sizes
  • +Multiple evaluation formats (1-Step, 2-Step, Instant)
  • +Scaling potential up to a 95–100% profit split

Watch out for

  • "Goat Guard" auto-closes funded positions at a 2% floating loss
  • A 2-minute minimum-hold rule voids profit (not losses) on very short trades
  • First two payouts capped at 6% of initial balance; $3,000 daily profit cap on funded accounts

  • +Low headline entry price with 41 plan variations across account sizes
  • +High scaling ceiling — up to $2,000,000 for consistent traders
  • +Several evaluation formats to fit different trading styles

Watch out for

  • The 90% split requires 10% profit over 3 consecutive months plus 4 successful withdrawals — not available from day one
  • The 1-Step model's 6% trailing drawdown locks in a tighter floor as the account grows
  • Lower direct max-funding ceiling ($200K) than ForRealFunding's $500K, though scaling can reach further

Checklist: what to check before you pay

Cost, drawdown, and payout terms only tell part of the story. For a full checklist — including red flags that show up after industry shutdowns — see how to choose a legit prop firm in 2026. If you want a plain answer on whether the model itself makes sense for you, start with is a prop firm challenge fee worth it.

FAQ

Legit prop firm questions

What makes a prop firm "legit"?

Published, checkable trading rules; a clearly defined payout process with a stated processing time; a stated policy on what happens to your fee if you pass; and — for firms with enough history — a track record of independent trader feedback on Trustpilot, Reddit, or forums. No single signal proves legitimacy on its own; look for all of them together.

Is ForRealFunding legit?

ForRealFunding publishes its trading rules, pricing, refund policy, and payout process (Rise and crypto, first payout 30 days after your first trade) on its site. As a newer brand, it doesn't yet have the years of Trustpilot or Reddit history that FTMO or FundedNext have — that's a genuine gap worth knowing about, not something to take our word for. Verify the published rules yourself before purchasing, the same way you should with any firm.

Is FTMO, FundedNext, or The5ers better than a newer firm?

They have longer track records and far more independent reviews, which reduces uncertainty. Newer firms can still be legitimate — they simply haven't accumulated that history yet. Weigh published rules and pricing against how much that track record matters to you.

Why do some rows say figures may be outdated?

Prop firms run frequent promotions and revise rules — profit splits, drawdown limits, and prices shown here were verified on the date at the bottom of the table, but the only way to know current terms is to check the firm's own pricing page before you buy.

Should I choose the cheapest prop firm challenge?

Not on price alone. A cheap challenge with a payout process that's hard to reach costs more than a slightly pricier one you can actually complete. Check daily drawdown, minimum trading days, and payout requirements alongside the fee.

What's the difference between forex/CFD prop firms and futures prop firms?

Firms like FTMO, FundedNext, The5ers, FundingPips, and ForRealFunding evaluate forex, indices, metals, and often crypto CFDs. Topstep and Apex Trader Funding are futures-only — no forex or crypto pairs — which suits traders who specifically want to trade futures contracts.
